30 Seconds To Mars Import Iranian Fans, Tibetan Monks For New Album

'We wanted to further the connection between the band and the audience,' Jared Leto says of band's 'digital summits.'
When it comes to 30 Seconds to Mars, Jared Leto really only knows one way of operating: global.

He's written songs in Berlin, then recorded them in Hawaii (with Kanye West), held RSVP-only "summits" (basically fan-only recording sessions) in Australia, Italy, France and Japan (to name just a few), drew influence from German electronic act Tangerine Dream and had an entire project helmed by British producer Flood.

So it should come as no surprise that, as the sessions for 30 Seconds to Mars' new album enter the home stretch, he's still expanding borders — with a so-called "digital summit" and some very unorthodox guest stars.

"I actually ended up getting a Twitter from someone in Iran, saying that they wanted to be a part of our summits but couldn't make it to any of the worldwide summits," Leto told MTV News Thursday. "So the idea to do the digital summit was born out of that. ... We wanted to further the connection between the band and the audience, to use the collective conscious as an instrument on the record."

So 30STM put a request out to their fans: submit content through TwitVid.com, and it could end up on the new album. And just like that, the floodgates opened.

"People are sitting in front of their computers, either by themselves or with their friends and family, all around the world, and they're recording sounds and singing and answering interview questions. ... It's as simple as clapping or stomping, to singing a chorus on a song," Leto explained. "We're experimenting with what you can do with a group. It's wonderful to see that people are so excited for this. Eventually, we're going to have to call it off, since we've gotten so many submissions. It's going to take awhile to go through all of them."

And while they cull through the video submissions, Leto and company are still putting the finishing touches on the new album (which Leto won't totally confirm is going to be called This Is War, despite several reports). The goal, Leto said, is to have the album in stores this year.

"We are literally in the death throes or about to give birth to this record," he said. "We're at the very, very, very end, wrapping things up, and it looks like the album will be coming out sooner rather than later."

And while fans already know that Kanye and Killers frontman Brandon Flowers make a cameo on a track called "Hurricane," there are some new guests that Leto personally invited to appear on the album: a group of Tibetan monks.    (в альбоме только Тибетских монахов не хватало!!! )

"There's a disparate nature to a lot of the songs. We explored a lot, and I think people are gonna be really surprised with this album," he said. "One really exciting thing we did a couple of weeks ago, we had been working on recording with some Tibetan monks for about a year, and we finally got them in the studio and recorded their voices chanting. We did some chanting with them. ... They were in [my] house, chanting and recording."

30 Seconds to Mars Bring Their 'Summit' to Iran

Iran and the US may continue to have their diplomatic struggles, but proving once again that the cliché "music is the universal language" is true, an Iranian fan and 30 Seconds to Mars have moved past that for the band's new record, 'This is War.'

After the band initiated their innovative Summit in Los Angeles this past April, where they invited fans to come to the club Avalon and be on the record, the response was so great they opened the experience to eight other cities in Mexico, Canada, the UK, Japan, Australia, Germany, Italy and France. But there were still countries left out.

"We got an e-mail from a fan in Iran saying he really wished he could be on the record," frontman Jared Leto says. Flattered and surprised they had reached people in Iran, the group teamed with Twitter to use Twitvid to open up the Summit to fans around the world.

Sure, 30 Seconds are crowd-pleasers, but Leto says the Summit is no gimmick. "The Summit is an integral part of the making of this record and that recording experiment succeeded in our eyes, minds, and ears," he says. "And it serves the songs."

Having had the chance to hear the results now on both the rocking title track and 'Call to Arms' we can tell you it certainly does work, delivering what Leto calls "another instrument" to the songs. And now with even more fans on board, thanks to an email from Iran, he is even more curious to see what fans deliver. "Once we're done with the digital summit it'll be even more exciting cause there'll be more countries, more people, sharing further in the experience."

The idea of the Summit is keeping with what Leto calls an interactive record, which he can't wait to bring to the stage. "I think it's very much a live record," he says. "I closed my eyes, picked up a guitar and imagined myself on a stage and what would be the song that I would play? So it's very much intended to be presented live."

По сравнению со старым (который мы впервые увидели 23 июня), на этом не 15, а 12 трэков, некоторые песни исчезли, а также появились новые. Но, скорее всего, и этот новый трэк-лист не окажется точным.

30 Seconds To Mars To Produce 2,000 Album Covers

30 Seconds To Mars have confirmed that they will release their Flood-produced (U2, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails) third album 'This Is War' on 23 November.

The first single will be ‘Kings and Queens’ which looks set for a mid November release.

The band have announced that the album will have 2000 different album covers featuring individual photos of fans from around the world. From today onwards fans will be able to submit photos to be used for the covers by pointing heading to wwwthirtysecondstomars.com.

The first 2000 photos to be uploaded that follow the proper specifications will become album covers. The campaign will run until 2000 usable covers have been uploaded to thefaceofmars@gmail.com .
